Recap of Planning and Zoning Meeting Thursday August 7th

The Double Oak Planning & Zoning Commission considered three separate requests related to the property at 250 Simmons Road, drawing one of the largest and most engaged audiences in recent town history. Residents filled the council chambers and overflow areas, participating with professionalism, patience, and respect throughout a long and detailed meeting. The high level of civic involvement reflected the community’s deep care for land use decisions and the future of Double Oak.

The commission voted to recommend denial of a Special Use Permit (SUP) for a proposed helistop on the property, citing concerns related to noise, safety, compatibility with nearby rural residential uses, and potential impacts on property values.

A separate replat request to divide the parcel into five lots was also denied, due to issues such as noncompliant lot widths and concerns about access and easement configuration. Since then, the developer has contacted the town and is actively working to correct the plat, with a revised version expected to be brought before the Town Council for consideration on August 18.

The commission did recommend approval of a rezoning request, with conditions, that would reconfigure the land into four Ranch Estate lots and one Agriculture Type 2 lot designations that better match the character of the surrounding area. The developer is coordinating with town staff to finalize revisions ahead of the council meeting.

Special thanks are due to the Planning & Zoning Commission members for their diligence and dedication, and to Chairman Andrew Weaver for conducting a highly organized, respectful, and efficient meeting. His leadership ensured a fair and transparent process that balanced community input with the town’s zoning standards.

This meeting served as a clear reminder of the importance of allowing our ordinances, zoning codes, and established processes to guide the decisions made by our committees, boards, and Town Council. These frameworks exist to ensure that decisions are made consistently, fairly, and in alignment with the long-term vision of Double Oak. The Town Council will consider all three items SUP, replat, and rezoning on August 18, 2025. The evening was a shining example of engaged local government and the kind of respectful public discourse that makes Double Oak a special place to live.

Double Oak Volunteer Fire Department Activity Report (July 2025)

The Double Oak Volunteer Fire Department (DOVFD) had an outstanding month in July 2025, responding to a total of 131 emergency calls 46 fire-related (35%) and 85 medical calls (65%). These figures highlight the department’s continued leadership in both fire protection and emergency medical services for our community.

In addition to call response, the department logged an impressive 1,656 hours of training, with a focus on retail fire scenarios and hose deployment techniques through advanced courses at Tarrant County College (TCC). Two members also attended the highly regarded TEEX Summer Fire School, further advancing the department’s knowledge and readiness.

July also marked the addition of two new volunteer members Natalie Purvis and Blaze Cardner strengthening the team for future response and community support. Collectively, the department contributed 3,652 volunteer hours, not including emergency calls or training, reflecting the extraordinary commitment and heart of this all-volunteer team.

And perhaps most impressively, the DOVFD accomplished all of this while also organizing and hosting one of the most successful 4th of July celebrations in Double Oak’s history. From a well-coordinated parade to an unforgettable picnic and silent auction in the park, the event brought together families, friends, and visitors from across the region and showcased the very best of Double Oak spirit.

Kudos to the DOVFD for not only answering the call when emergencies arise, but also for creating moments of celebration and unity that strengthen the fabric of our town. Their tireless service, dedication to training, and community leadership continue to set the standard for what a volunteer department can achieve.

Double Oak Police Speed Tracker Trailer Statistics

Speed Tracker Results will now be provided on the eCode360 website at the link below with the latest results. The trailer will stay at specific locations for extended periods as we continue to analyze the data to assist in staffing our patrol hours at different locations.

Speed Trailer Survey at 250 Timberleaf Drive (July 24 – August 7, 2025)

The Double Oak Police Department conducted a speed survey on 250 Timberleaf Drive, monitoring traffic from July 24 to August 7, 2025. The data captured a total of 3,273 vehicles, with 1,462 traveling westbound and 1,811 eastbound.

Key Findings:

Overall Compliance:

  • 73.66% of vehicles (2,411) were traveling at or below the posted 30 mph speed limit.

  • 26.34% (862 vehicles) exceeded the speed limit.

  • Excessive Speeding (≥40 mph):

  • Only 0.95% (31 vehicles) exceeded 40 mph.

  • Notably, one vehicle was recorded at a speed of 72 mph.

By Direction:

  • Westbound: 77.15% compliant; only 6 excessive speeders.

  • Eastbound: 70.84% compliant; 25 excessive speeders.

Speed Trends:

  • Average Speed: 27.24 mph

  • Average Violation Speed: 33.46 mph

  • 85th Percentile Speed: 32 mph westbound, 33 mph eastbound

  • Most common pace range: 23–32 mph, representing the majority of traffic.

Observations:

The majority of drivers on Timberleaf Drive are driving responsibly, with over 73% of all vehicles staying within the posted speed limit and a very small fraction (less than 1%) engaging in excessive speeding. While the average speed of violators is just slightly above the limit (33.46 mph), eastbound traffic shows a slightly higher rate of speed violations and more vehicles exceeding 40 mph.

The presence of the speed trailer appears to have had a positive impact, reinforcing safe driving habits in the area. Continued monitoring and awareness may help reduce the small percentage of higher-speed violations and encourage continued compliance on this residential street.

Timberleaf Drive shows encouraging results for compliance, with low rates of excessive speeding and a generally safe flow of traffic. The data supports the effectiveness of speed monitoring as a deterrent and provides a foundation for maintaining safety on one of Double Oak’s key neighborhood roads.

New Safety Measures for Double Oak Public Meetings

In response to rising safety concerns at public meetings across the country, the Town of Double Oak is implementing enhanced procedures to ensure a secure and respectful environment for all attendees. While Double Oak remains a close-knit and civically engaged community, recent discussions such as those surrounding a proposed helistop have drawn heightened attention and commentary on social media platforms like Facebook. As community participation grows, so does the importance of maintaining safe and orderly public forums.

Under the direction of Police Chief Daniel Miller, and in consultation with the Denton County Fire Marshal, new safety protocols will now be in place for all public meetings held at Town Hall. These include Town Council, Planning & Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustments, and any special-called meetings. Attendees will pass through a metal detector screening, and all bags will be checked. No firearms, edged weapons, or other prohibited items will be allowed inside the building please secure these in your vehicle prior to entry.

To comply with fire code requirements, the Cook-Wilkinson Community Government Room is limited to 85 people, with an overflow area in the Town Hall lobby accommodating an additional 20 individuals. These limits are set by the Denton County Fire Marshal and will be strictly enforced.  As a reminder all meetings will be broadcast LIVE on the Double Oak YouTube channel, so if you are unable to attend in person you can attend via the web.

All meetings will begin promptly at their scheduled starting times. If entering after a meeting has begun, please do so quietly to avoid disrupting the proceedings.

We appreciate the public’s continued support and cooperation as we work together to maintain the safety, civility, and accessibility of our town’s democratic processes.
