Double Oak - Friday Update (05/23/2025)

We would like to wish everyone a very happy Memorial Day.  This is special weekend honoring those who have died while serving in the country’s armed forces. Memorial Day originated during the American Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle. The first national observance was in 1868, when General John A. Logan called for a day of remembrance to decorate the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country.  Memorial Day was originally call Decoration Day, but after World War I, the name was changed to Memorial Day, and in 1971 it became a federal holiday. The day is observed by visits to cemeteries, where flags and other items are placed on the graves of veterans.  In addition, Memorial Day is considered the unofficial  start of summer, so let’s all enjoy time with our families for barbeques and picnics and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we all enjoy!

Please remember to visit the Memorial Day Flag Display at Wright Park next to Town Hall

Jellybeans Food for Kids Update

Jellybeans Food For Kids would like to say “Thank You” the Double Oak Women’s Club for their generous donation of $500 to Jellybeans Food For Kids and PediPlace. With this donation we prepared fifty “Birthday Bags” for the children at PediPlace with upcoming birthdays, after their immunization or office visit, to take home items to bake their own birthday cake. Birthday Bags included: box of cake mix, frosting, sprinkles, birthday candles, plates and napkins including foil pan and oil.

Who We Are and the Need in Our Community
Jellybeans Food For Kids was founded by Double Oak resident Judy Carrico in April of 2020. Our organization is an all-volunteer nonprofit based in Double Oak.  Our mission is to feed hungry children and involve the entire family in this effort — kids, parents, grandparents. We believe that service can be a powerful, teachable moment.  Twice a month, we collect and distribute Snack Bags, non-perishable food and monetary donations to children in need. Our next Snack Bag collection is June 4th from 9-11am at the Double Oak Town Hall. Most people don’t realize that right here in our area — there are children who quietly face hunger. These aren’t faraway problems. These are our neighbors, and we have a simple but powerful way to help. In fact when we delivered these fifty “Birthday Bags” on May 21st to PediPlace, their supply of Snack Bags was completed depleted.  Therefore; there is an URGENT need for Snack Bags and we appreciate your help to prepare Snack Bags for the June 4th collection.

In 2024, Jellybeans Food For Kids provided these collections to PediPlace!

Our Key Partner: PediPlace
One of our main partners is PediPlace, located in Lewisville at Main Street on South Old Orchard Lane. Founded in 1994, PediPlace is a nonprofit pediatric clinic that provides healthcare to children from birth to 18 years old who are uninsured, on Medicaid or CHIP.  Their mission is simple but vital: To make healthcare a reality for every kid. In 2025 they expect to provide primary pediatric healthcare to approximately 6,000 patients in 22,000 office visits. For more information visit their website www.pediplace.org
