Statement from the Mayor
Dear Double Oak Residents,
I feel compelled to address recent public statements and campaign materials that contain inaccurate and misleading claims regarding Town staff and prior personnel decisions.
Let me be clear: these claims are not supported by the facts, and more importantly, they are harmful. Repeating misinformation does not make it true and it does not serve our town.
Over the past several years, the Mayor and Town Council has made deliberate and thoughtful decisions to strengthen our organization by elevating expectations, improving accountability, and ensuring we have the right people in the right roles to serve our residents. In some cases, that required making difficult but necessary changes where performance, accountability, and overall effectiveness did not meet the standards our town deserves.
While it is not appropriate to discuss individual personnel matters publicly, it is important for residents to understand that certain roles were not delivering the level of service expected for the compensation being provided. In some instances, responsibilities were not being fulfilled in a manner that reflected the trust placed in those positions. As stewards of taxpayer dollars, the Town has an obligation to ensure that residents receive appropriate value and service and when that standard is not met, changes must be made.
These decisions were made responsibly, professionally, and always with the best interest of Double Oak in mind.
Personnel decisions whether hiring, restructuring, or separation are made in accordance with established processes, professional standards, and applicable policies. Assertions to the contrary are simply inaccurate and overlook the Town’s responsibility to ensure effective service delivery.
Unfortunately, the current rhetoric being used goes beyond policy differences and into public criticism of Town employees. Our staff across administration, public works, and public safety are dedicated professionals who serve this community every day. They are not in a position to publicly respond and targeting them in this manner is both inappropriate and counterproductive.
Even more concerning, some of these attacks have extended beyond Town employees and into the personal lives of individuals bringing spouses, family members, and private citizens into campaign messaging. This crosses a line that should never be crossed. Family members who do not serve in any official capacity have no role in these discussions and should not be subjected to public criticism or political tactics. That kind of behavior is not leadership it is reckless and damaging to the fabric of our town.
This type of conduct has real consequences. It impacts morale, creates an unnecessary and unhealthy environment, and risks undermining the Town’s ability to recruit and retain qualified employees. Publicly berating staff and involving families does nothing to move Double Oak forward, it only divides.
Serving on a Town Council is a position of trust and responsibility. It requires commitment to facts, adherence to established processes, sound decision-making, and respect for the community, its employees, and its residents. The role is to lead, solve problems, and make thoughtful decisions that serve the long-term interests of the Town not to engage in personal attacks or create division. The standards for leadership should always be professionalism, accountability, and integrity.
It should also be noted that the mayor is not on the ballot in this election cycle. The focus should remain on the future of Double Oak not on personalizing decisions that were made collectively by your Mayor and Town Council.
Leadership matters. Tone matters. Facts matter.
Double Oak deserves all three.
Respectfully,
Patrick Johnson
Mayor, Town of Double Oak
